Get to Know me.. (Part 1)

Good Morning!

I got a comment on my last post about a reader feeling like he/she didn’t know me well enough so I decided to create this post to make my blog more personal, you know.

I contemplated making a video or making a list, but I decided to write this like a narrative. So, here goes…

My name is Adamara, which means “Daughter of Grace”. I have a bunch of other names, but if I start listing them it might take two days! Before you conclude, no, I am not Yoruba, I am IGBO, from Anambra state (South-east Nigeria). Yes, Igbo people also have 200 names lol.

I was born and raised in Abuja (ABJ for short). I lived in my childhood home for 14 years! That’s so crazy! I was too excited to move that I forgot all the sweet memories I had in Harper Crescent. I remember writing on the walls with the house keys. Oh gosh, this one time, I fried plantains. When I finished, I poured the hot oil in a plastic container and put it in the freezer to cool. A while later, I opened the freezer and the oil had melted a hole through to the bottom level. Let’s just say God saved me from my mother’s wrath that night. I also remember ironing on my mom’s bed while watching TV and burning through the duvet, sheets and mattress. Yes, I was that kid. But we thank God for growth and maturity.

I am the first, last, and only child. I was lonely sometimes as a kid, but I learned to deal with it. I made friends and spent most of my time with them. One of them, who I’ve known since I was about a year old, Sommie and I are still friends two decades later. I think I just gave up my age there haha!

My favorite childhood memory has to be visiting Disneyland Resort in Orlando with my mom when I was five years old. We went during the Christmas holiday. Everything was decorated for the holidays. Lights, giant Christmas trees, fake snow… It was like a winter wonderland. During the vacation, we visited my cousins who lived in Miami. While we were there, I ate so much cheesecake that I started throwing up. Pepto Bismol came through for me. Since then, I never ate cheesecake… until this year. Capital Grill in DC has amazing cheesecakes! It tasted like a piece of heaven. Oh, did I mention I’M A HUGE FOODIE! I love food- cooking, and more importantly, eating. Yeah, it makes sense now right? That’s why I have so many posts about food. Yup!

Personality wise, I’m quiet when I meet you, but then I unleash my craziness once I get comfy. I have really bad stage fright! Like, it’s so crazy! All the presentations I had to do in college couldn’t solve it. I’m really trying to work on it though. I hope to speak in front of thousands of people at my own TED Talk one day. I’m reserved… in the sense that I don’t like to talk about my feelings or anything like that. If I’m going through something and you ask “What’s wrong?” odds are, I’ll respond saying “Nothing” 9 out of 10 times, except I really want to talk about it. I’m working on being more expressive too. I tend to bottle things up until I explode, which is never a pretty sight. It’s exhausting too! I’m a sucker for love. I love to love, and be loved, and just love. I have felt no greater love than my mother’s love. It is indescribable. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Besides blogging and eating, I enjoy reading- I am currently reading “Last One Home” by Debbie Macomber, taking photos, dancing, singing (I can’t sing to save my life), taking photos, modeling (for myself), and sleeping. In my friend’s words “Ada, you can sleep for Africa.”

Well, this is getting longer than I anticipated, so I’ll stop here for now. If you have any questions for me, I’ll be happy to answer them. You can type them in the comment section below.
